ADHD

What causes ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters in areas of the brain that control self-regulation and executive function.

The resulting brain dysfunction makes it difficult to multitask, stay organized, solve problems, and regulate your emotions and behaviors.

The challenges caused by ADHD are intense, causing problems severe enough to negatively impact your performance at work and to interfere with your personal relationships.

What symptoms develop if I have ADHD?

The symptoms caused by ADHD are categorized as inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. You may be challenged by just one category or all three.

If you have ADHD, you may:

  • Have trouble paying attention
  • Have a hard time organizing tasks
  • Fail to pay attention to details
  • Make careless mistakes
  • Find it hard to relax
  • Not follow through on instructions
  • Frequently lose important items
  • Forget daily tasks or miss deadlines
  • Start projects but never finish

Executive function deficits can cause problems with your working memory. Working memory gives you the ability to hold several pieces of information in your head just long enough to use them.

You need a good working memory for tasks such as doing calculations, planning your next step, and being able to associate one activity with another.

How is ADHD treated?

For many patients, the first line of treatment for ADHD is medication. Stimulant medications improve your attention and help you ignore distractions by boosting the brain chemicals essential for thinking and attention.

TMS also boosts brain chemicals, and it does the job without medications. Instead, TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of your brain affected by ADHD, increasing brain chemicals, and improving your ADHD symptoms.

What should I expect during CloudTMS therapy for ADHD?

After you relax in the treatment chair, your provider at Texas Mind Science places the TMS coil against your head, ensuring it’s in the proper location to send the magnetic pulses into the targeted area of your brain.

For the next 20-40 minutes, you simply sit in the chair while the CloudTMS machine delivers the magnetic pulses. You hear clicking with each pulse, and you may feel a slight tapping. Otherwise, the pulses go safely through your skull and stimulate your brain without causing pain.

Most patients have five sessions each week for 4-6 weeks. After each session, you can drive yourself home and return to your daily routine.
